Potatoes are fattening
This is a popular misconception that potatoes run up against time and time again. A serving of boiled potatoes only has 105 calories, yet the same serving size of French fries has 369 calories. It’s not the potatoes themselves that are fattening, it’s the way they’re prepared with too much fat.
A lot of raw fruits and vegetables are good for you
It’s a fact that raw fruits and vegetables have more vitamins that their processed counterparts. However, since raw fruits and vegetables are difficult to digest, eating an excessive amount of them can cause indigestion, painful flatulence and diarrhoea. It’s better to eat a good mix of cooked and raw vegetables.
The best oil is olive oil
Olive oil is healthy, there’s no doubt about it. But rapeseed oil is much healthier because it contains significantly more of the essential omega-3 fatty acids. In the ranking of top cooking oils, rapeseed oil is followed by linseed oil, soy oil and walnut oil.
Coffee dehydrates you
This popular stimulant does act as a diuretic. All that means, however, is that it makes you go to the toilet faster than a cup of herbal tea will. But the bottom line is that your body can’t excrete more fluids than it takes in. That’s why you can include coffee in your daily fluid intake.
Chocolate is bad for your skin
Not true. The type of skin you have is largely determined by genetics. Smoking and the sun are your skin’s true enemies. Pimples are almost always caused by hormones.
Fresh milk is healthier than UHT milk
Although fresh milk tastes better and has minimally higher vitamin content, in reality the difference between the two is insignificant.
Oxygenated mineral is a pick-me-up
Inhaling and exhaling deeply is more effective. According to current knowledge, only very small amounts of oxygen are transported via the walls of the stomach and intestine into the bloodstream.
Don’t drink water after eating stone fruit
And don’t drink water after eating cucumbers and gooseberries either, or your stomach will really hurt. Wrong! Fruits can’t swell after water is added. What can hurt, though, are the fermentation processes that take place after you eat unwashed fruits with yeasts and other fermentation-generating microorganisms on their surface. Usually the stomach acid kills these germs. However, if a lot of fluids go into your stomach at the same time, the stomach acid is diluted to such an extent that it can no longer carry out this task. So you should always wash fruit to reduce the number of germs.
Spinach is rich in iron
This theory has long been disproved. A scientist once calculated the iron content in spinach and found that 100 grams of dried spinach contained 35 milligrams of iron. Since spinach consists of 90 percent water, this iron content value actually referred to one kilo of spinach. Accordingly, spinach provides the body with hardly more iron than a serving of French fries. In addition, your body does not utilize iron from vegetable sources as well as it does iron from animal foods.
Peanuts are nuts
This isn’t true. Peanuts are beans, not nuts. Like peas and beans, they are legumes and they protect their seeds with an elastic, leathery shell. Nuts, on the other hand, have hard shells.
