You can influence your ability to relax, concentrate and perform to your highest potential through your eating habits. Fruits, vegetables, and cereal grain products top the list of the foods you need to eat. By helping yourself to these on a daily basis, you are supplying your body with the vital nutrients it needs to better cope with stress and strain.
The power of vital nutrients
B vitamins: Found in whole-grain products, legumes, nuts, pork, potatoes, milk and dairy products, fish and vegetables. They help provide energy, improve concentration, strengthen nerves, boost memory and enhance fitness.
Potassium: Legumes, vegetables and fruit are the best sources of potassium. This vital nutrient controls nerve impulses and muscle contractions and regulates cardiac conduction.
Vitamin A (beta carotene), vitamin C, vitamin E, phytochemicals: Substantial amounts are contained in fruits and vegetables (vitamin C is found in particularly high amounts in citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers and kale), nuts, seeds, legumes and vegetable oils. They protect the cells from damage caused by free radicals.
Magnesium: The best sources are magnesium-rich mineral water, legumes, nuts, whole-grain products, potatoes, soft fruit and dark green vegetables. Magnesium regulates nerve and muscle tone.
Calcium: Significant amounts are found in calcium-rich mineral water, as well as milk and dairy products such as cheese. Calcium stabilises the cell membranes and, like magnesium, regulates the conduction of impulses between nerves and muscles. In addition, calcium is used for building teeth and bones.
Food for a good mood
Our bodies produce a good-mood substance called serotonin. The more serotonin there is in the brain, the more well-adjusted and relaxed we feel. The basis for this „feel-good hormone” is the amino acid tryptophan, which is found in lean meats, fish and legumes, as well as protein-rich foods such as cheese, quark and poultry. Carbohydrates enable tryptophan to make its way into the brain, where it is converted into serotonin.
Ideally, you should eat a source of tryptophan, such as milk, together with carbohydrates, for example muesli. So have a bowl of SCHNEEKOPPE muesli with milk or yoghurt, and get your day off to a great start!
